Phonics Screening Check

92% of Year 1 children at Water Leys passed the phonics screening check in 2023! 

At the end of the year, all children in Year 1 sit the national phonics screening check. This is a check written and provided by the DfE where children are asked to read 40 real and alien words containing sounds that they have learnt. The check is carried out by a member of school staff who the children are familiar with. Children will have practised before the official check so will be used to the process.
