Reading

Some new vocab we have learnt

This week (27/10/25), we are focusing on the difference between fact and opinions. Texts try to disguise opinions by using things that make them sound like facts.

Here is a clear difference:

Facts can be proven and supported by evidence or data.

Opinions are something that shows what people think, feel or believe about something.

So far, we have focused on: summarising the text, scanning, facts and opinions, and background knowledge.

Using our background knowledge (our own real life experiences, things we've read and things we've seen) helps us to put ourselves in the shoes of the character and understand the text better. We can infer more meaning by using our own experiences.

We also need to be able to summarise texts we've read so we can give brief descriptions to other people. This also shows we have understood the text as a whole and can then compare books with either similar topics or by the same author.

Have a go at encouraging your child to these 'spot lights' when they read with you.

Can your child tell you 'what a good reader looks like'?

Come back soon to see many of the tools, techniques and strategies that 'makes us a good reader' and supports us when we need it.
