READING AT WATER LEYS
Our aim is for all children to leave Water Leys with good reading skills and a love of reading.
All children have a daily whole class reading lesson where they read and discuss a number of different texts. Children also read widely across the curriculum, read regularly with an adult in either a group or 1:1 and have regular whole class story time.
We have a large and comprehensive reading scheme for home reading. This includes Read, Write Inc phonic based books for children who are still developing their understanding of phonics which are closely matched to the sounds they have learnt in class. We also send home book banded books (which includes books from Rigby Star, Usborne Young Readers and Oxford Reading Tree) which further develop the children's understanding of phonics and also develops their ability to read sight vocabulary (i.e. words which can't be sounded out) and continues to support their comprehension skills. As the children become older and more confidence readers they progress to free readers, where we encourage pupils to choose their own books based on enjoyment and challenge.
Please encourage your child to read regularly at home, ideally daily as the children who read the most become the best readers and this in turn enables them to access more of the curriculum.
