Vocabulary Development

Vocabulary Development

In our drive to improve reading across the school, we have identified the need to further develop the children’s vocabulary. In recent years, there has been growing concern about the “vocabulary gap” widening between children from different socio-economic groups. By age three, it is believed that some pupils may have heard up to 30 million fewer words than others. In school, we are ensuring that lessons regularly focus on securing new vocabulary in all curriculum areas. We recognise that vocabulary development starts through effective conversation and high-quality talk, not just in relation to reading but about everything that our children experience. Please take a look at the attached leaflets for ideas on developing talk with your child and please speak to your child’s class teacher about ways in which you can support their vocabulary development at home
